Maui

Maui Campervans ReviewMaui is synonymous with quality vehicles. They are squarely aimed at the luxury traveler and the family. Whilst they do have a smaller vehicle that is designed for only 2 people, their real strength is in larger vehicles.

Their range focuses on the larger vehicles that come with toilet and showers. Whilst this kind of thing will cost you money up front, it can save you money down the line. Often you will find the smaller vehicles staying at caravan parks for a few days in order to enjoy the convenience of a shower and a clean toilet. Maui’s larger vehicles, which is most their fleet, comes with these included ie. no caravan park fees required. You also get the advantage of an indoor kitchen. Again, a lot of the smaller vehicles have you cooking outside.

Cleanliness and quality is also in the forefront of the mind of the Maui mob. Most vehicles are new and clean. They acquire their vehicles brand new and only run them for a few years before passing them off so you can expect everything to work properly. They also have depots in pretty much every city that you want to go to, so if something is wrong you can probably swap it when you get to next destination, provided that you contact them first.

All this piece of mind, quality and freshness, comes at a cost. Maui is a large company that is owned by the same parent company as Britz. So if you are interested in knowing where your dollars go, it is to a listed company on the New Zealand stock exchange. Being a large company with large overheads and new vehicles means the price of renting the vehicles is going to be higher. But seeing as they are aiming at the traveler who values quality and convenience over budget, they don’t seem too worried by this.

Maui is also a good one to get a 4WD from. They have less range of vehicles than Britz, but the 4WD they are running is the same kind – a Toyota Landcruiser troop-carrier – but the design is  different. They tend to have a slide out kitchen and most of them also have the fridge at the rear, which means you don’t have to get all the way in to get a nice cold beer, but you do have to do your cooking outside. If you are concerned about getting wet whilst cooking, then I suggest hiring a side awning. They are an extra $5pd up to max of $80.However, if going off-road, definitely look in to this vehicle. Having the pop-top means less wind resistance when driving i.e. save fuel, but if you find yourself with a windy night, be prepared to be a little battered by a flapping canvas near your head. Pop tops also mean having to work when you get in to be able to stand up. It might only take a few moments to pop it, but sometimes it is annoying if you are only going to be in there for 4 minutes before you drive off again. There are always trade offs between a hi-top and a pop-top. Maui doesn’t offer a hi-top 4WD.

Overall, if you are looking for comfort in your journey, Maui is going to have something for you. You can be assured of a clean, fully operational vehicle that is luxury all round. If you are looking for the cheapest campervan in the market, you won’t find what you are after at Maui.

Renting a Maui Campervan for the weekend was a great experience.

I arrived early to get the best time for customer service at the branch, and all aspects of the contract were explained clearly and easy to understand. We rushed through the process to get going quicker, and this was ok as a DVD show through was provided in the van.

We were given a Mercedes 6 berth with only 14,000kms on it and in new condition. It was wonderfull to drive with more than enough power to get up the hills, and I felt that the van was superior to most other transport on the road. All linen, crockery and utensils were provided in the van, so all we had to do was buy DVDs, food and pack our clothing. The only difficult part was negotiating round abouts, however I drove slowly and focused more on the driving experience.

Returning the van was easy, with a simple check in, and pleasant customer service. Even though the van mirror was damaged at the Camp ground, I was covered by the insurance and I did not need to pay extra.

I would recommend Maui Campervans, and we are planning our next trip soon.

Too rushed at pick-up. We had to steer check of inventory, rather than maui (as it should of been) several important items were missing. Our van battery has been a problem; responded well when we called for help.

Send the c.d out to the agent to pass on to the tourist, for beginners to much info to take in especially when tired and jet lagged.

Sink (toilet) falls out. Cupboards and drawers don’t close properly – on bumpy roads more than once everything fell out. One of them we first had to refix with new screws.

We have been told that Maui is the premium brand. We were so disappointed when picking up the van by the incompleteness of equipment and resulting delays. Vehicle so far operating without any problems.
